Ortygia is an island in the Sicilian city of Syracuse, on which the historic center of the city is situated. The island has an area of less than a square kilometer and has about 4,500 inhabitants. In the northwest, the island is separated from mainland Sicily by only a few meters wide passage spanned by three bridges.
